Albert Camus said - “Blessed are the hearts that bend; they shall never be broken.”

Last year while our school was being rebuilt, we made the decision to open virtually although we knew that this would not be easy for children with special needs on an island with special needs after a major disaster. It  was challenging but proved much more successful than we had anticipated or hoped. We connected with many of our students, and learning happened despite the frustrations encountered. It was not optimal but we were grateful for the connection and forward movement.

In July, we were preparing to open with a hybrid model of face to face education. We were anticipating opening a beautiful new campus with our in-person students; unfortunately we were informed that due to the increase in Covid cases and the strain on the medical system, we would not be able to. It was another blow in a long line of blows over the last two years.

On Abaco and at ECC, we have many times been called upon to persevere and so we have been once again. We gathered our on-line resources and mentality and began the process of reconnecting with students and families. In an effort to increase our technology, we invested in SmartTerm Platform which the company tailored to the needs of students with challenges, and have been working diligently with them to make our education more effective. We have also invested in fiber optic internet allowing the teachers on campus to teach virtually from their classrooms.

Our flexibility and determination continue as we strive to offer the very best to our students online, until the day we can welcome them back safely to campus.  We are learning, communicating, singing, breathing, exercising, discussing and continuing on with our Green School efforts remotely  with our friends. Our campus is ready and waiting for their return in person as soon as it is possible!!!!

Welcome to the new school year 2021-2022!

We have started the new year on-line with the new Smart Term program.  Though we all wanted to come back to our newly rebuilt campus with the students,  we are continuing on line for everyone’s safety during this ongoing pandemic.  Unfortunately, the Delta variant has greatly impacted Abaco. I wish to express my sympathy  to everyone who has experienced sickness and loss during this difficult time.

I want to welcome all of our new ECC students and families.  We currently have 80 students enrolled online.  This year we continue our new early intervention preschool program with 5 students.  We also have so many new primary students that we have reopened the second primary class.  We  have a full intermediate class and 3 secondary classes.  Of course we still have our worksop trainees who are as always reliable  and consistent in their attendance and participation.

We are continuing to implement the Conscious Discipline Program.  This year we have added class meetings and school family assemblies.  Class meetings focus on developing problem solving skills and conflict resolution.  The Friday school family assemblies focus on community development and belonging.

This year we are implementing the Brigance Assessments and curriculum with all of the students.  We now have all three levels of the program, early childhood, school age and adult.  These are programs developed for the learner with special needs.  The Brigance will help us  measure student progress as well as serve as a guide for curriculum and IEP development.

I continue to hope that soon  we will have children playing on our newly designed playground, that we will have our students and trainees making soap, using the newly donated sewing machines, reading from all the donated books, cooking in our brand new kitchen… But in the meantime we will focus on safety and continue to get our campus totally completed and ready for the return of the students.  Our dedicated teachers will continue to greet their students everyday online as we say, “Welcome to Every Child Counts.”

I wish you well,

Every Child Counts opened for the new school year with a return to Virtual Learning.  On September 6th, teachers, students and parents, powered on their laptops or tablets, were back to school. As a part of our continued commitment to the principles of Conscious Discipline, ECC instituted our School-Family Assembly every Friday at 10:00am.

The purpose of the School Family Assembly is to convey important information, celebrate life events, highlight individual/group achievements and contributions to the School Family. It’s ECC’s way to stay connected with our students and their families.

Connecting through Zoom, we practice our breathing, Brain Gym exercises, sing, and fellowship together. The highlight of the School-Family Assembly is our celebration time! Any milestones staff, students and their families wish to share is worth celebrating. Birthdays, new additions to the family, perfect attendance, assignments completed, we celebrate. Students participate through prayers, reading scripture lessons and the singing of the National Anthem.

Our ECC family continues to sustain us even though we remain isolated from each other. The School-Family Assembly reminds us that we are family and we are not alone.

Workshop

It is the beginning of a beautiful, successful, and adventurous virtual school year. The Trainees will embark on another phase of learning. We begin our morning with prayer, mindfulness exercises to heighten their abilities in becoming more independent, building their social skills, communication, and life skills. It is important for them to begin completing basic daily tasks with little assistance I.e. getting dressed, preparing meals, and doing laundry. Following covid19 protocols, it’s our goal for our Trainees to be successful learners and engage in all virtual activities.

Our morning routine helps us set the tone for the whole day!

Routines help kids to acknowledge  the concepts of before and after and what happens next in the day. When our students  know what to expect, they feel more confident. A calendar routine will help develop a better idea of time and how the world works.

Deep breathing techniques are a strategy used in Dr. Becky Bailey’s Conscious Discipline program.

This week’s new breathing technique is the Drain which means to:

Extend arms out, pretending your arms are faucets. Tighten arm, shoulder, and face muscles. Exhale slowly making a “sssshhh” sound and release all your muscles, draining out the stress.

How to Use Wish Well Rituals :

The Wish Well Board is  used for our class  to offer love and caring for each other.

1) put your hands over your heart

2) take a deep breath in

3) pause and picture something precious in your mind 4) breathe out while opening your arms and sending those precious, loving thoughts out to the person you are wishing well.

Secondary Life Skills

Hello, we are the Secondary Life Skills class! Our year started off by celebrating the time we have together, and learning the Covid 19 protocol on how to keep ourselves safe from germs.

We have also been learning how to cook, specializing in peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. We love eating and sharing ideas together, even if it is still virtual. Although it has been a challenge, our class family has done well at encouraging each other to stay connected and remind ourselves to always do our best.

School Is In!!

The new school year is off to a great start. Students no doubt were eager to return to a beautiful campus and lovely classroom spaces. But for now, we remain in virtual mode. Despite constant internet and device challenges the students and most of the parents have been doing their best to get connected daily to the virtual classes.

Daily activities in our virtual classroom include beginning the day with a Brain Smart Start from Conscious Discipline, a self -regulation programme. These activities help to improve students’ mindset and emotional well-being, help them to understand school expectations and goals, cultivate a sense of unity so they can all get to know each other and practice taking care of each other. Brain Smart Start also promotes feelings of safety and connectedness.

Students are also practicing covid safety protocols such as proper hand washing and wearing a mask correctly at home in preparation for going back to face to face learning. Students enjoy other learning activities like Early Academics, Music, Art and Ecology. A big addition to the school’s programme is the introduction of weekly class meetings. The aim of this activity is to strengthen the ECC school family through the celebration of students’ accomplishments and the teaching of problem-solving skills.

I continue to be thankful and feel hopeful that our school family remain safe and is able to return to learning in a safe environment as soon as possible.

I wish you well.

Don't Forget to Wear Your Mask!

Primary B

Welcome to Primary! My name is Ms. Sara, and I have a group of five students that attend class daily. We've been learning about many different topics like keeping our bodies safe from COVID, our solar system, the impact of hurricanes and learning about body parts, along with having Music, ECO, Math, PE and English classes. Our students love to attend class, learn about new areas and participate in activities. We hope you enjoy the pictures of our students holding up different projects that were assigned this year. They enjoyed it very much and loved showing their creativity.

Intermediate Class!

The month of September welcomed students back to a virtual and not a physical classroom as we all had hoped. Our intermediate class has 10 students, 8 of which are reporting almost daily. We are off to a running start.

We have spent the month of September reviewing the topics we did last year in Math, language, social studies and reading comprehension.

This new school term we have added afternoon classes and have introduced science and Health/Family Life to our curriculum, as well as Music and ECO.

I am very encouraged by my enthusiastic group that I have dubbed “Team Awesome”, they are an awesome bunch of students. I wish them every success this school year.

GO TEAM!

Secondary A

As we enter another exciting year of virtual learning, this class has made great progress. I can't begin to tell you how awesome these students are doing. I have 12  wonderful students, 5 girls, and 7 boys. They were introduced to a new platform, which was a bit challenging, but they were determined to log on. which was highly commendable.

Our day starts with a prayer, scriptural, conscious discipline breathing, meditation, and a song. We learn Covid-19 protocol, how to wash our hands, sanitizing and wear a mask the appropriate way. However, our current focus is Math- adding and subtracting.

We also study Social Studies, Grammar, and Reading short stories, which help build their vocabulary, comprehension, confidence.

These few weeks have helped them realize that even though we are apart we can be together. Above all my students are motivating and supportive of each other.

I could not be happier with the outstanding things they have accomplished.

Mr. Gary
Secondary B

Welcome to our class! I am Mr. Gary, I teach the Vocational Department/ Secondary B class. Every day, we have 7 faithful students that login onto the SmarTerm Platform to learn about their chosen vocational field. We have excited students who are being trained to become car and boat mechanics. Last year, we started teaching mechanics and have continued the course this year, to advance their knowledge and skill. We hope that after graduation from Every Child Counts they will be able to get a job as a mechanic. Not only are our students learning about mechanics but they are learning about ECO, Music, improving their communication skills and mastering basic math skills.

ECO CLASS

We have a very exciting year lined up for ECO class.  We are an ECO School, and as such we are part of the largest global sustainable schools programme - it starts in the classroom and expands to the community by engaging the next generation in action-based learning.

We work directly with the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), based in Copenhagen, Denmark.  Their belief is to engage the youth of today to protect the planet of tomorrow.

This year, as an ECO school, we have been invited to join the Biodiversity Campaign.  This is an event to encourage our students to take an active part in supporting and saving our natural environment.  We will be provided with a vast set of activities to emphasize the importance of protecting nature.

I look forward to engaging with all of our students in this campaign and I believe that each one of them will benefit from the exercises.

Here’s to another action packed fun year in ECO class!!!

Music
Welcome to the Music Room!

It has been a while since hurricane Dorian struck Abaco and destroyed our school. With the help of various benefactors, the community, and the NGOs in these past two years our school buildings are up and so is our Music Room!

All Hands and Hearts worked tirelessly to build the new Horizon building from where the former Convent building stood. Within this new building, the ECC Music Room is being housed and is now an awesome and spacious room. The outcome? The music room is very ready to have music classes and music ensemble rehearsals. I, as the music teacher myself, can't hold on anymore to my excitement when the day our students come back to school and take their steps, whether big or small, into the road of musicianship.

As of now, only online music classes are being held in this room, but sooner or later, the sound of musical skills being nurtured will be heard again in the school.
